3 Minutes Sketch Challenge: Odok's Sketchbook

Calling all artists of all skill levels: I'm looking to collect a bunch of sketches of natural landscapes to use as 'Odok's Sketchbook' in the current season of TOTM. Got 3 minutes? Like to draw? Why not submit your sketch and be part of the story? Sketches should be done in pencil, should feature mountains in the background, show no sign of civilization, and ideally have some subtly interesting feature that I can translate into script for the show.

Back from AardCON!

I attended AardCON III in Calgary last weekend and got the chance to meet a number of cyberfriends I had known through Instagram for a few years - and I am so happy I went. Highlights included: a game of Dark/Light run by Friendly Mike (super fun game, super fun GM), a speech I gave about solo roleplaying, a BBQ at Sean (the organizer)'s place, & a whole lot of hanging out with some truly lovely people.  The con is a real grassroots operation, but it drew nearly 300 people, so it looks like it could grow into something big in the coming years.  Hopefully not too big though :)

We also took a day after the con to visit Banff, Lake Louise & Mirror Lake - all so spectacularly gorgeous that I decided right there to use both lakes as settings in the podcast in the future.  I will spare you pics of the day trip (for now) but here's some shots from the con.

Sean, the organizer.

It's a mimic!

Beautiful Art by Del Teigeler

This one really knocked my socks off - even moreso when the artist offered to send it to me.

Well, the piece arrived today - and tonight it goes in a frame :)

If you're interested in seeing how the picture was made, Del also put up a timelaps YouTube video showing the process from start to finish.

You can watch the video here.

Thanks, Del!

Welcome to the Deathtrap: Review of OSitD Expansion Module: Return to Duervar

My good friend Brian over at DeathTrap Games and producer of Swords v Madness did a review of my latest expansion.  Brian also did some playtesting and is due credit for helping Return to Duervar to achieve its full potential for fun and style.

Here's a link to the full review.

Here's an excerpt:

Everything I loved about the original OSitD is still true about OSitD: Return to Duervar: it is an excellent Rules-Light game, lightning Fast, it is very Flexible, and  Jon's writing and dungeon design is powerfully Evocative.

A Review for the Original One Shot in the Dark

I don't know how I came across this so late, but there we are.  It's a review for the core OSitD game, and I can't think of a better time to share than right now, since I have just put out the expansion:

Thanks to The Gaming Table!

ANNOUNCING: The New One Shot in the Dark Expansion and Module Maker Kit!

In celebration of my fifth year doing Manticore, I have just put out an expansion module for One Shot in the Dark - and I took the story from Season 1.  In this expansion, you play as a party of dwarves, sent from Thangar to investigate the hold of another clan - one that has fallen under a terrible curse.  You'll explore and fight your way to a final battle with  Barok Ironskin, one of TOTM's most popular antagonists.

Of course, you don't need to know about that story, or have listened to season 1 in order to enjoy the adventure.  It's available on DTRPG now for 99 cents.  Just follow this link.

While making this expansion, I realized that the design of the game was itself like a game - or a puzzle - and so I decided to also make the Expansion Module Maker Kit, which is free.  Get a copy here if you are interested in that.

Finally, you can pick up a new and improved game sheet designed and generously made available for free by Carl Green.

Here's the link for the game sheet.

I hope that these expansion materials can extend your fun if you have previously enjoyed the Core Rules of One Shot in the Dark.  I should mention that these are expansion materials and do not come bundled with the core rules.

Inspiration for Ep22?

At this point, I can't remember if I went searching for images with symbols used as makers' marks after coming up with the idea to use them in the description of Lyrhain's sword, or if I came up with the idea for the sword after coming across this image.

Either way, this photo informed the scene in the Armor Room.

Most of all: swords are cool.

Update from FanExpo 2024 Competition

Last summer I ran a little drawing competition at FanExpo in Toronto.  Draw a character doodle, and I'll turn the best ones into important characters in TOTM Season 3.  I got about 40-50 drawings, but three of them stood out.  I had to make some changes to them - the names for sure, and the general cute factor needed to be altered - but I did find a use for two out of three, so far:

The name Nacho is a no-go, but this is basically how I see elves. D'Reni and Tentir are in the show because of this sketch.  Apart from the hair... this is basically of how I see them, appearance-wise.

This is Midge.  I figured that no fairy would call themselves 'Midge' nor allow anyone else to call them that, but I liked the idea of fairies & sprites playing key roles in the narrative. The encounter where Tentir gets cursed is just a taste - there's another important moment coming up in the next few months.

This guy, Zom... I know how to use him, but we haven't met him yet.  Interestingly, the name 'Zom' would work as-is, but in order to make some lore elements 'click' better, I have changed it.  Watch out for a powerful hooded mage somewhere down the road...

Blog Posts on Hold for the Next Few Weeks

Hola everyone,

I'm off to Mexico to escape the rest of the Canadian winter, so all Shownotes for episodes 13-17 will be delayed until I get back in March.  At that time I'll release them in a batch.

Other uploads (the occasional table, etc) may or may not happen on time; I'll do what I can.

All actual podcast episode releases should happen on time, as well as mirror YouTube uploads, but, if there are errors in the audio, I won't be able to fix them until after I return.

So long... I'll drink a tequila for ya :)

Rolling a 20 for Weather

In Episode 12, I rolled a 20 for weather and chose 'obscuring mists' as the 'best-for-the-PCs' result.  I think it was only a day or two after writing that bit of script that I was walking to work (this would have been late last October) and the Canadian weather gave me this:

A little bit of OSitD & a little bit of Pendulum

Over the last 2 weeks I heard from a couple of listeners who wrote to me about my little DTRPG supplements, One Shot in the Dark and Pendulum: A World Building Tool.

Thanks very much to James J, for sharing (and letting me share) his game map.  I love the creativity and, as he put it, the final boss is significant!

---

I also got an email from JMS who has created a full settlement using Pendulum and has put it up on his blog, My Hero Brain.

Be sure to check out the Town of Oakton, here.

Thanks very to both of you, James J and JMS!! Your emails made my new year very happy :)

Twelve Days of Kitbash, Pt 2

Here's the second half of my 12 day run of kitbashing and figure-making...

On day 7, I made 7 Myconids.  I used Air-Dry Clay and added a few props.  These were fun, fast and turned out well.  Possibly my favorite batch of the whole run.

Next, I did a batch of undead.  The skull is actually Das modelling clay in a Halloween chocolate mould.  The rest are converted toy soldiers (boy, did I ever dig deep into my bag-o-soldiers this year!

The ninth day was dedicated to: Goblins.  I realized too late that I didn't have photos that matched most of the goblins in the photo... really just 2 of them were made from my small-scall models with FIMO heads.  The others were recast from a bunch of board game figurines.

On day 10, I made 10 NPCS - these are villagers and guards and such.  I actually made 15 or so, but I needed something for day 10 and just grabbed a bunch from the 'finished' pile.  They are all recasts.  As with other recasts, facial features got lost.  But they look good enough for NPCs.

Day 11: Armorered Warriors.  More recasts.  Details turned out a bit better with these guys.

On the last day of kitbash, I did a whole slew of orcs.  I really like how they turned out - looking like demented cavemen/Texas Chainsaw Massacre cosplayers.  In game, I do the pig-faced orcs, but these guys remind me of Bakshi Fire & Ice orcs (if that's what those are) and they are pretty cool.  Recasts with thermoplastic, for the most part.

Well, that's the lot.  And it is a lot... If you do the math, I made another 78 minis this year.  My 2 year running total then is 156.  Actually, it's quite a bit more...  Maybe next year, seeing as I am starting to have a storage problem, I'll do 12 days with a single model each day, and I'll concentrate on quality over quantity :)  Who knows... I might even learn how to paint.

Twelve Days of Kitbash, Part 1

Happy New Year, everyone - I hope you all had a great rest.  Like last year, I got busy with making and painting minis.  This time around, I knew I wouldn't have as much time to commit, so a few of these projects were at least started earlier in the year and I just finished them up over the hols for this yearly challenge I'm doing.

Here's what I made, how it all went and what I learned:

The biggest piece by far, at 6" tall, is my T-Rex purple dragon.  I scratch built the base, then used some clipped Stegosaurus tail spines as horns, and then wings made of wire and masking tape (this trick gives a good illusion of bone under leathery skin, I think.  All in all: big and fairly impressive and ... I would say... actually to scale.

Next up were 2 Fire Giants made with Aquaman figurines - another toy bash and a simple one.  I scratch built swords and a shield.  I cut off the arms and reposed one of them.  Made green stuff belt buckles.  Easy, the scale is workable, and they look pretty good.

The third batch was something of a repair job.  I took a mould of the one good tail to recreate two that were missing.  I converted flintlock pistols into a crossbow and other weapons. I made a green stuff shield.  Quite successful.

Next, I made 4 mummies.  This was inspired by a post from my buddy Angry Piper, who had shared his recent paint job.  I thought: oh, I'll just wrap toy soldiers in... things.  I experimented and learned something: the best two were done with string or greenstuff.  The worst two (my first) were both done with yarn.  Don't use yarn.  If you like the look of the middle right mummy, that's string and glue.  Centre left is green stuff.  The other two barely look like mummies.  Partial success.

Amazons: This is one I started earlier in the year and it's a mixed bag of Oyumaru recast, green stuff, Acetone Plastic and other bits.  Some of the gals turned out better than others.  Facial details are very hard to get from a recast, it turns out.  These are ... well, they're OK.

More mixed medium here.  Most of these lizard men are toy soldiers with dino heads or plastic snake heads.  A few have recast bodies.  My favorite (the photo isn't great) is the guy with the net.  I made that by soldering wires together and it looks kind of dope!
