Great episode and a good (albeit highly variable) fight scene. I think this fight highlights something most DMs know which is just having lots of "actions" is a massive advantage. If the leverage multiplier spells (the animate skeletons, cause fear and hold person(s)) don't work out the single bigger actor is likely doomed. But it makes the scene have a wide range of outcomes. Versus something like 6 x Orcs. The chance of a TPK is very low, but the chance of wounded PCs is very high (lots of attack rolls). One interesting thing is Gyrios sandbagging Bless, if there was ever a time I'd think he might have used it there before this encounter. As usual amazing audio art. You've inspired me to begin my own as I think this form of media is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThis is all true. Combats like the one with the hobs are so deadly because of the number of attacks, even though their damage dice are fairly low. As to why Gyrios didn't use his bless spell, I can't remember if I even considered it (bad tactics on my part) because when Harl rushed Sov to keep him from blowing the horn, Gyrios just ran up too. Neither could reach him in time, but that felt like a realistic action regardless. But you're right - he *should* have cast it as soon as Aradine and Umura made their plays.
ReplyDeleteChalk it up to Gyrios' character trait of wanting to help his friends. He sees Harl rush to danger and follows in. You'll have a chance to even up the actions with a solo 'big bad' once they meet a hydra :)
